Enjoy!

The Enjoy! cookbook was produced by the U&I (Utility and Industrial?) group of the UCLA Engineering Department.  The book is undated, but given the graphics and recipes, it is likely from the late 1960s or early 1970s. It must predate the tragic 1978 airplane crash death of Allen Tetelman (a beloved professor), who contributed a recipe for “Steak Tartare.”

 

A parenthetical on the book’s cover refers to the compilers as “The UCLA Engineering Distaff.” Literally, a distaff is the essential part of a spinning wheel that holds the unspun fibers in place. Colloquially, the word is sometimes used to mean the domestic sphere, a women’s division, or the maternal side of a family. I'm not certain if it’s used here in earnest or somewhat tongue in cheek, given the double entendre of “distaff” as a mechanical term. It’s something the book’s participants in the Materials Department would particularly recognize. 

 

Other contributors to the cookbook include several female graduate students, female employees, and both professors and those attributed as “wife of.”

 

Pictured is the "Pleasure Dome" contributed by Anne Burrell. The "dome" is made up of three layers: cheese & pickles, liverwurst & olives, and ham & egg, molded inside a bowl, chilled, and then turned out onto a platter with crackers.
